Careful seniors in the digital world

New Year’s classes of the “E-Senior II” project – 2022-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000067331 seniors from the intermediate group started with a large dose of useful knowledge about cybercrime, and more precisely “phishing”. This is a relatively new issue and it is very important for seniors to be aware of its existence, because unlike other computer attacks that exploit errors, gaps or weaknesses in the software and its configuration, here the target of the attack is the person. In the case of phishing, the attacker usually uses the authority of the person or institution he impersonates, contacting, for example, as a supervisor, colleague, bank, electricity supplier, office, transport company or a well-known store.

As part of the classes, seniors solved quizzes in which they had to assess whether a given message is a scam or the truth. Thanks to such exercises, the participants tested their perceptiveness and familiarized their eyes with false news. Then each visited the website Have I Been Pwned? allowing you to control whether user data has been compromised during a data leak. People taking part in the classes also checked how strong their password is and how long it will take hackers to crack it. At the end of the classes, the seniors watched a video that showed a real conversation recorded between a fraudster and a potential victim of fraud.

Seniors were very active and showed a lot of knowledge about cybercrimes – they themselves gave examples of scams that are used by online thieves. Most people eagerly asked about the data that should not be provided over the Internet or by phone and how to behave if they suspect that they may be a victim of fraud.

The vigilance of our seniors is at a high level and they will definitely not be fooled by cyber fraud.

Seniors’ Christmas meeting

Christmas is an extremely family and magical time that we spend with our loved ones. It is a time full of peace, warmth and joy, when all disputes are extinguished, grudges are forgotten, and love and support from loved ones are the solution to all problems.

On December 16, 2022. On 21 December 2020, pre-Christmas workshops for seniors were held at the 1st Degree Industry School in Sosnowiec, organized as part of the “World on a Plate” project, project no.: 2021-2-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000040182.

The classroom was beautifully decorated. The Christmas tree was decorated with colorful baubles. Nativity scene, charming lanterns, Christmas decorations allowed to create an unusual atmosphere in the room. On that day, the seniors in the classes prepared the following Christmas Eve dishes, i.e.:

  • mushroom soup,
  • herring under the eiderdown,
  • crunchy cookies.

After preparing the dishes, the participants of the project together with representatives of the SMART Foundation sat down to the table together. The Christmas meeting began with greetings for the coming Christmas. Afterwards, everyone ate the prepared food. There was no shortage of singing carols together.

Such meetings bring a lot of joy to everyone. They make people realize how important the presence of another person is in the life of every senior.

Important Place – Mystery of Darkness

On December 19, 2022. students of classes 4DG, 3EO and 2KT of the Transport Technical School No. 4 in Sosnowiec had the opportunity to collide with the reality that affects blind people on a daily basis. The Mystery of Darkness is a space run by the “Foundation of Important People” in order to disseminate knowledge about the functioning of blind and visually impaired people in the dark. Guests visiting this place have an unusual opportunity to visit a specially arranged educational path that allows them to experience the way blind people function. Classes have shown that it is not so simple at all. The students could see for themselves what happens to a person when their eyesight fails and how the other senses work at such a moment.

Classes in an Important Place carried out as part of the “Colors of Life” project – No. 2021-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000036535 introduced students to the “gray reality” of the blind in a practical way.

Christmas workshops for seniors

Christmas is fast approaching. Preparations for Christmas, making Christmas decorations together, decorating rooms are all the magic and charm of December days.

This year, i.e. December 17, 2022. seniors at manual workshops made beautiful Christmas trees in a pot on their own, showing ingenuity and creativity. The decorations were made of a technical block, string, wood and a pot. Dried fruits, acorns, cones, nuts, beads, ribbons, stars and other products were used to decorate the ornaments.

During the classes, seniors learned how to combine materials, choose colors and design new patterns. There were interesting conversations, laughter and fun. It was welcoming, warm and nice.
At the end of the workshop, each participant could take home a handmade Christmas tree decoration.

The workshops were organized as part of the Erasmus+ Program “It’s never too late to learn” project no. 2021-1-PL01-KA122-ADU-000021044.

Scandinavian cuisine, or love for simplicity

In December, seniors participated in culinary workshops devoted to Scandinavian cuisine.

At the beginning of the classes, the instructor – Mrs. Mariola, presented the project participants with the above-mentioned cuisine, which consists of traditional flavors of: Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. It is one of the healthiest cuisines in the world. Its advantage is simplicity, which translates into a relatively small amount of fried dishes. Herring, salmon, cod, trout, lobster, scallops are smoked, dried, canned, often grilled, and then served. Scandinavian cuisine is characterized by the use of a small amount of spices and herbs.

Later, the seniors started preparing the following dishes in subgroups, i.e.:

  • Finnish pancake from the oven pannukakku,
  • hernekeitto – traditional Scandinavian pea soup.

The classes ended with a tasting of jointly prepared dishes.

The first classes of the project “What’s playing in your heart?” behind us!

On December 8, the first classes created as part of the project “What’s in your heart?” No. – 2022-2-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000090896.

At the beginning of the class, we got to know each of the participants. Their previous musical experience and expectations towards the classes, and at the end of the first part, the hosts presented their concept and we started working!

We worked sitting, standing, singing facing the wall, in groups creating short songs about us, but the best exercises came out in full motion, where everyone could dance, jump and feel free 🙂
The final challenge was to sing the Christmas song Jingle Bells which turned out great!
A quick division into tenors, altos and mezzo-sopranos and the participants set off to learn the text and notes.

At the end of the workshop, the participants shared their impressions. There were only positives related mainly to the feeling of being at ease. Expressing yourself through music, singing freely without shame and inhibitions is what we wanted to achieve!

See you in the next classes 🙂

Opole seniors young at heart!

The seniors from Opole are equal to the seniors from Sosnowiec in being active!

On December 7, the first classes in Opole took place as part of the project “Young at heart!” No. – 2022-2-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000091172.

Classes for seniors from Opole were organized similarly to those that took place a week earlier in Sosnowiec. At the beginning, each of the seniors was subjected to an interview, which was aimed at adjusting physical activity to the health condition of the exercising person.

The training that the seniors undertook that day focused on stretching. These exercises lead to an overall improvement in body posture and to an increase in the range of motion in the joints. Then, the lecturer prepared a series of exercises for seniors to improve blood circulation and overall body efficiency. Our seniors were definitely not cold on this winter day.

Warmed up and full of enthusiasm seniors can’t wait for the next classes.

It’s time to START the “Young at heart” project!

Today, i.e. November 30, 2022. the first classes carried out as part of the project “Young at heart!” No. – 2022-2-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000091172. A large group of seniors checked in at the start to feel better and increase their physical activity.

At the beginning of the classes, the lecturers conducted interviews with each of the participants in order to be able to get to know the seniors better and their ailments, which should be taken into account when planning physical activities during the classes.

After getting acquainted with the profiles of the participants, the trainers, who are also members of the initiative group of the project, introduced the seniors to the world of sport, familiarizing them with the equipment and exercises they will face. Then everyone moved on to do a workout focused on gymnastics to strengthen joints, bones, ligaments and tendons. The activities performed were controlled under the watchful eye of our trainers. All this so that seniors are aware that they are performing the exercises correctly and that they do not incur unnecessary injuries.

This meeting was the beginning of an adventure for seniors and preparation for the future for further development of work on their physical and mental health. Everyone is eagerly waiting for the next class.
