What is breast cancer prevention?

Breast cancer prevention consists of screening tests (so-called screening), i.e. carrying out tests aimed at detecting the cancer when there are no symptoms of the disease, and taking active measures to detect the cancer as early as possible (secondary prevention).

Breast cancer diagnosed early can be successfully treated. The smaller the tumor or the detected lesion in the breast that is not palpable by manual examination, the greater the probability that it is a non-invasive (i.e. non-metastatic) type of cancer. Also, when an invasive cancer is detected, the smaller it is, the more likely it is that it has not yet metastasized to the lymph nodes, and the greater the possibility of a curable treatment.

The following tests are used to detect breast changes early:

  • self-examination of the breast by a woman
  • medical examination at each check-up at the family doctor and gynecologist
  • breast ultrasound
  • mammography
  • participation in the Breast Cancer Early Detection Program
