The first classes of the “World on a plate” project are behind us.

On March 4, 2022. the first classes were held under the project “World on a plate” – 2021-2-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000040182 co-financed by the European Solidarity Corps. 12 people participated in the culinary workshops. The classes were held in a gastronomic studio equipped with modern equipment. In March, the theme of the culinary workshops is “Polish cuisine – known and unknown”. After a short lecture on the origin of the given dishes of Polish cuisine, its history, ingredients, and modifications to which it has undergone over the centuries, we began to act. Using carefully selected ingredients, under the supervision of trainers, the participants of the project prepared their own dishes, the smell of which was spreading throughout the building. It was:

  • sour rye soup with smoked meat, potatoes and egg;
  • potato pancakes;
  • dumplings with buckwheat, smoked cottage cheese and fried onions;
  • carrot pancakes;
  • bread;
  • potato dumplings
  • buckwheat with fried sausage and onion;
  • mushroom sauce.

Each of the participants received recipes for an ongoing culinary book. At the end, all project participants sat down together at the table to taste the prepared dishes.

March is the month of Down syndrome

The beginning of March is a new month, a new color and a new disease from our project “Colors of Life” – 2021-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000036535. In our project, March has been assigned to Down’s Syndrome, and the main color is the color of the rainbow. The most recognizable attribute of the disease is colorful socks. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that belongs to the group of aneuploidy. Aneuploidy is an abnormal number of copies of chromosomes that contain genetic material. In Down’s syndrome we are dealing with a triple copy of the 21st chromosome, instead of a double. The excessive amount of genetic material located on this chromosome is the cause of the characteristics of this syndrome. Belong to them:

  • typical appearance changes
  • lowering the intelligence quotient
  • many accompanying flaws

Solidarity with Ukraine

On February 24, at 3:45 am, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia began. The fight for freedom has been going on there for 3 days. A lot of people have already left their homes and apartments to escape the war. Despite the kilometers separating us, we can help Ukrainian refugees coming from the endangered area. How wisely can we help?

  • Do not duplicate information, photos, false recordings, uncertain so-called unverified – they fuel panic.
  • If you have friends from Ukraine, ask how you can help. Let us not be indifferent to the needs of individuals.
  • Currently, a lot of collections are organized – if you want to take part in them, check whether they are organized by reliable entities.
  • Blood donation stations are organized to help the wounded, if you can donate blood – be interested in it.
  • Keep in mind that the collections are not only about money, but also food, clothes, thermal blankets, sleeping bags, etc. are collected.

These are some of the most important tips that we would like to share with you.

All good things come to an end

All good things come to an end. Our adventure with the Solidarity Project “E-SENIOR”- 2020-3-PL01-ESC31-094902 has also come to an end. In order to jointly recall the last twelve months and present the achievements of the Seniors, on February 25, 2022, the ceremonial ending of the project took place.

The main point of the meeting was the presentation of commemorative certificates to the participants of the project confirming the skills acquired during the classes. A nice touch at the end was a snack during which seniors remembered the beautiful moments together and planned further adventures of this type.

The Foundation already has some ideas for joint implementation, but you will learn about it soon!

National Day of Combating Depression

On February 23, we celebrate the Day of Combating Depression. As we know from the project “Colors of Life” -2021-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000036535 depression is a civilization disease and it affects everyone. It is estimated to be the second most common cause of death among people aged 15-29! The causes of depression are very different, they can be some specific events in our life, such as:

  • loss of a loved one,
  • negative experiences in childhood,
  • chronic stress.

They can also be social factors such as:

  • insulation,
  • lack of support from the environment,
  • personality traits and even genetic determinants.

There are many reasons, but how can you help someone suffering from depression? A depressed person often doesn’t ask for help. This is due to the fact that sometimes the same people are not aware of what exactly is happening to them, which is why it is so important:

  • SUPPORT that whatever happens to a given person, we will be there for them.
  • The next important step is to convince the sick person to see a doctor, because he or she will help to understand the essence of the problem and to work through it. The doctor will also be able to assess how advanced the depression is, because in some cases pharmacotherapy is needed to combat the symptoms so that the patient can function more easily on a daily basis.
  • It is worth encouraging a sick person to simple activities so that they do not sit at home with their thoughts. Let’s remember about the method of small steps.
  • One of the most important ways of helping people with depression is self-education. It will be easier for you to understand a sick person and see the world through the eyes of a sick person.

Help from outsiders is very important. Remember, depression is not a whim, it is not a fabrication, nor is it a fashion. It is a very serious disease and the person who is sick does not decide to get it.

“Colors of Life” – summary of the month

We would like to remind you that the project “Colors of Life” – 2021-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000036535 financed by the European Solidarity Corps is still ongoing. It is true that we are already starting a new month, but it is worth stopping and summarizing the previous month. January was devoted to the global disease of obesity. It is a disease that arises for many reasons and will not go away on its own without treatment. As research shows, about 25% of Poles suffer from this disease. The fight with it is often long and sometimes complicated, but we should always start the fight by trying to change our eating habits. The question is how to do it?

It’s best to start with the basics and remember the food pyramid. Interestingly, the pyramid has changed a bit over the years, because we will not only find products in it. At its base, there is an additional element, which is physical activity, and we do not necessarily mean exercise sports, because activity also includes:

  • walking up the stairs,
  • walks,
  • cycling, etc.

The next foundation of the pyramid are fruits and vegetables, they should be half of what we eat. At the next level, we will find cereal products. It is recommended especially for people struggling with obesity to choose whole grains, because they are more valuable. Further in the pyramid we can find dairy products, i.e. all kinds of natural yoghurts, kefirs, etc. The two higher levels are meat, which we overuse very often. It is worth considering alternatives such as fish, lean meat to reduce the saturated fat that is abundant in red meat. At the top of the pyramid we find fats, we need them, but we should pay attention to what fats we use in our diet. Vegetable fats such as rapeseed oil, olive oil, etc. are more valuable and therefore healthier. When we have a basic knowledge of what our food pyramid should look like, it is much easier to find our mistakes in everyday life and eliminate them. It is enough that for a few days we will write down what exactly we ate for a given meal. We will then see if our diet is well-balanced and if we have not overdone something. If it turns out that we actually eat red meat too often, you can try to modify some dishes and add chicken or fish. If we notice that we eat too little fruit and vegetables, it is worth preparing a fruit salad for lunch. In such ways, in small steps, we build new eating habits.
