A friendly atmosphere, joint preparation of meals and conversations at the common table are all that seniors encounter during culinary classes organized as part of the project “World on a plate” project no.: 2021-2-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000040182. They are looking forward to the next classes.

Summary of the “Colors of Life” project

The project “Colors of Life” No. 2021-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000036535 implemented as part of the European Solidarity Corps has come to an end.

The students of the Transport Technical School No. 4 in Sosnowiec actively participated in the project. Participants raised their level of knowledge about various diseases that affect young people. They touched on an extremely important aspect of tolerance of patients by their peers. During the project, participants became aware of the importance of well-being and how they can take care of it. Each of the people participating in the project, through their involvement, had the opportunity to realize how important it is to take care of physical and mental health. Thanks to group work, each participant could get to know and understand the needs of others, becoming more sensitive to other people.

As part of the summary of the project and the dissemination of the results, a guide “How to take care of well-being” and a calendar for 2023 “Colors of life” were created, which took the form of electronic flipbooks. Both materials are open to the public and free.

The published guide contains information on well-being and how to achieve it. The prepared compendium gathers useful knowledge and tasks aimed at making people aware of the factors affecting the sense of fulfillment and satisfaction with life.

The calendar for 2023 has been designed in a manner consistent with the course of the project. The appearance of each of the twelve months is devoted to the topics of diseases, well-being and tolerance, just as it was during the project. In each month, important dates related to the previously mentioned issues were marked.

Due to the large response of satisfied people who participated in the project, we will want to continue it in the future.

The next computer classes are behind us!

More computer classes behind us!
Computer classes carried out as part of the “E-Senior II” project – 2022-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000067331 are gaining momentum. Our seniors are getting better from lesson to lesson.

On November 7, 2022. during the classes with the second intermediate group, we repeated the information from the previous classes on working in Google Docs and smoothly moved on to familiarizing seniors with Google Sheets.

On November 9, 2022. seniors from the primary group learned how to operate a mouse or touchpad through play. Each of the seniors had to play solitaire and try to solve it. The whole group bravely supported each other, which resulted in many solitaire wins!

The seniors were very excited and eager to learn new things. They coped very well with the tasks assigned to them and are already looking forward to the next challenges.

Be sure to follow the activities of seniors in the “E-senior II” project on our website and social media.

A trip to the “heart of Katowice”

On November 8, 2022. a group of seniors from Sosnowiec went on a trip to two economically friendly districts of Katowice: Giszowiec and Nikiszowiec. Their history is primarily associated with hard coal mining.

The purpose of the trip was to learn about the history and culture of the Katowice region as part of the project “Never too late to learn” project no. 2021-1-PL01-KA122-ADU-000021044.

The seniors started their tour of Giszowiec with a guide from Plac pod Lipami. They also saw the Silesian Inn, a pastry shop in the Giszowiec park, a Rehabilitation and Educational Center for children requiring special care, a kindergarten (formerly a forest inspectorate). Walking along the streets of Barbórki, Kwiatowa and Pod Kasztanami, they admired the housing estate of historic workers’ houses, which was designed as a rural colony located away from the mines. All low houses with soaring roofs, architecturally diverse with their own garden, built at the beginning of the 20th century give the right atmosphere to this place.

Later, the Seniors, together with a guide, went to Nikiszowiec, often called the “mining heart of Katowice”. This is the most interesting district that Katowice can boast of, not only against the backdrop of Poland, but also Europe and the world. During the tour, participants saw:
1. Former town hall.
2. Church of St. Anna.
3. Św. Anna.
4. Museum of Katowice History – Department of Ethnology of the City.
5. Komzones (a series of shops in arcaded arcades).
6. Zimbardo Center.
7. Post office building.
8. Liberation Square.
9. Primary School.
10. A historic housing estate built for the miners of the “Giesche” mine.

Each participant was delighted with the old tenement houses with red window sills and window frames.

After a day full of attractions, everyone went to the charming “Cafe Byfyj” for a delicious Silesian cheesecake with coffee or tea.
Tired, but richer with new experiences and experiences, the Seniors returned to Sosnowiec. The weather was good. The trip to Katowice was undoubtedly very successful, and the memories will remain in our memory for a long time.

American style kitchen

American cuisine is known all over the world. It is often associated mainly with hard-to-digest and high-calorie dishes. It is characterized not only by diversity, but above all by the speed and simplicity of preparing dishes.

Burgers, hot dogs, fries, fried chicken, pancakes and apple pies are some of the American dishes that are popular in almost every country. The richness of this cuisine is the lack of imposed rules according to which specific dishes should be prepared.

On Friday afternoon, i.e. on October 21, 2022. seniors participated in American cuisine workshops under the project “World on a plate” No. 2021-2- PL01-ESC30-SOL-000040182. During the workshops, the menu was as follows:
– corn soup,
– mini burgers,
– pancakes,
– lemon tart.

During the course, participants learned about new flavors and recipes of American cuisine. The atmosphere at the workshop was very nice and cheerful. Everyone gathered was extremely pleased.

The effects of the work of seniors can be admired in the photos below

October – the month dedicated to hepatitis C

The last month in the project “Colors of Life” – 2021-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000036535 is October. The disease assigned to this month is hepatitis C and the main color is dark green. Hepatitis C is caused by the HCV virus that is present in six different genotypes, each divided into subtypes – the main difference between the subtypes and genotypes is their response to treatment. Infection with hepatitis C is spread parenterally by transfusion of blood and blood products, as well as by medical procedures performed with the use of non-sterile equipment, combined with the violation of the continuity of the body integuments. People particularly exposed to hepatitis C infection are:

  • healthcare professionals,
  • drug addicts who inject drugs (sharing needles promotes infection),
  • people with blood transfusions,
  • people who frequently change sexual partners (casual sex) – this applies to both homosexuals and heterosexuals,
  • haemophiliac patients who require the administration of blood-derived clotting factors
  • people who live under the same roof or have very close contact with someone infected with hepatitis C,

Hepatitis C can also be infected by transmission from mother to fetus during delivery.
