Blue June- Diabetes

The beginning of the month only means one thing! We will learn about another disease under the project “Colors of Life” – 2021-1-PL01-ESC30-SOL-000036535. June in the project was assigned to Diabetes and the main color is light blue. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease resulting from disturbed secretion or action of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. This disease is divided into different types:

  • Type 1 diabetes is most common in children and young people, and in children; it cannot be prevented, and the only treatments for this diabetes mellitus are with insulin, diet and an active lifestyle (exercise).
  • Another type of diabetes is type 2 diabetes, which most often affects the elderly, and the reason for the increased level of glucose in the blood is not a lack of insulin, but its malfunction in the body (insulin resistance).
  • Gestational diabetes – diabetes mellitus that is diagnosed during pregnancy and resolves after childbirth.
  • Secondary diabetes (type 3) – is a group of diabetes, which together account for approximately 2-3% of all forms of diabetes in Europe and North America. Characteristic for this form are other disorders or syndromes coexisting with diabetes.
  • Mono-gene diabetes – monogenic diabetes accounts for 1-2 percent of all diabetes cases; it arises as a result of a single mutation, therefore its final diagnosis depends on genetic testing;
  • LADA Diabetes- This falls under the definition of type 1 diabetes, late-onset autoimmune diabetes in adults;
